To make sure you don't have to struggle every time you open and close your door you'll need to measure the height and width of the old door or the framing, then use those measurements to buy the right size door. If your old door was a good fit, you could look for a door with the same measurements. If you're measuring the framing, a good rule of thumb is to allow a 2mm gap and both sides of the door and on top, and an 8 mm gap on the bottom.
Before you begin painting, you'll need to choose the right colour and select the right tools for the job. Then, you'll need to prep your door for painting. You can either decide to paint your door in place or paint it on a sawhorse. Remove or protect the door's knobs and hinges using painter's tape and start painting.
Assess the opening to determine where the incorrect gap is occurring. Sometimes gaps can be caused by loose or missing screws. Make sure all screws are in place and are tightened. Check to see if all the hinges are the same size and be careful not to mix in standard and heavyweight hinges. If you keep seeing light coming in through the door, you may need to replace your old weather stripping to give your door a nice seal and fix the gap.
There should be a space of 2mm between the door and door jamb around the sides and on top, and an 8 mm space on the bottom. If your door doesn't fit these requirements, you will need to make further adjustments, so it fits correctly.
